Abstract

The article analyzes the ideas of a famous Russian legal scholar, I.A. Pokrovsky, about the role of intelligentsia in the “catastrophe”, which broke out in 1917, that was the word he used, describing the results of February and October revolutions. According to Iosif Alekseevich Pokrovsky, the people were characterized by “mental darkness and political ignorance”. And it was the Russian intelligentsia, who was supposed to play the leading part of a facilitator in the transition from monarchy to the Republic and democracy, making sure it goes within legal framework and without shocks. I.A Pokrovsky puts a question, if the Russian intelligentsia was able to teach the people to respect the law, while the law was not respected by intelligentsia. And what should have been done by intelligentsia to try and improve the situation? The article also deals with different approaches of the 20th century Russian thinkers to the concept of intelligentsia.
